I founded TK Electricians out of passion and necessity. Passion is straightforward – from a young age, I enjoyed tinkering with gadgets and figuring out how things work, and how they can be made to work better. Many afternoons were spent taking apart Tamiya cars and figuring out its inner workings (in the process devising ways to make them run faster). This inclination drove me to take a Bachelor in Electrical Engineering at Nanyang Technological University, eventually graduating with Second Upper Honors.
Upon graduation, I started in Keppel Shipyard as an Electrical Engineer. As an aspiring electrical engineer, Keppel was a great environment for me to hone the craft. I was planning, executing and leading the electrical project for vessels. The work was complex but it was a great environment for me to build up my skills. The hours I put into configuring electrical work on vessels is the bedrock upon which I fall back on whenever I face an engineering problem.
After 2.5 fruitful years at Keppel, I decided to take the skills I honed to become an in-house electrical engineer. This was around 2014. At that time, I was also in the process of buying a matrimonial home for my new family and we made plans to renovate our apartment. And like many newly-wedded couples, we found some parts of the renovation process lacking. In particular, I saw that through my experience, I could value-add tremendously to the electrical wiring layout from both an engineering efficiency and an aesthetic perspective.
Thus I went in-house to become an electrical maintenance engineer at the Singapore Refinery Company to better understand the intricacies of electrical work in buildings. Through my home’s renovation work, I had found a second passion – providing quality electrical work in buildings that are efficient, low-cost and beautifully executed. This newfound passion was borne out of necessity – there was much room for improvement in a highly fragmented, lightly-regulated industry.
In 2015, I was ready to strike out on my own. I had the skills and knowledge and drive, but I lacked one crucial element. I didn’t have customers. I didn’t have contacts in the industry that would provide me with work. So I did what any crazy, passionate entrepreneur would do: bite the bullet and become an apprentice for a year. After a year of apprenticeship with a 25-year veteran in the industry, I understood enough of the business.
In September 2015, I accepted my first job. It was just me and my toolbox. My initial fears that I would not get enough work to sustain an acceptable level of income quickly vaporized. Through word-of-mouth, I was at full capacity within two months. I needed to hire more people and in December 2015, I bought my first van and hired 2 electricians. As volume grew, I quickly bought my second van in November 2018 and today we have 10 electricians in TK Electricians. Needless to say, I skimped over a lot of the past 3 years but the journey towards being the Number One Electrician in Singapore has only just begun!
